What is fissure sealing in children?

Problem

Fissure sealing is an effective preventive procedure that protects permanent molars from caries. Fissures are deep natural grooves on the chewing surface where food debris and bacteria easily accumulate, which are difficult to reach with a regular toothbrush.

The dentist covers these depressions with a special light-cured sealant, which "seals" them, creating a reliable barrier to protect the enamel from destruction.

The procedure is completely painless, does not require anesthesia, and takes only a few minutes. Sealing is especially recommended for children aged 6–7 years immediately after the eruption of the first permanent molars to prevent the development of caries at an initial stage.

Eruption of permanent chewing teeth (molars and premolars)

Deep and narrow anatomical shape of the grooves (fissures) on the tooth surface

High susceptibility to caries or difficulties with quality tooth cleaning in a child

Although sealing is a preventive procedure, it is most appropriate when signs of deep fissures are detected. Since such depressions are difficult to clean with a regular toothbrush, bacteria quickly begin to destroy the enamel. Timely sealing creates a "shield" that prevents the contact of microorganisms with tooth tissues.
