What is a root tip resection (apicoectomy)?

Problem

Apical root resection is a microsurgical procedure during which the infected apex of a tooth root is removed along with the adjacent inflammation site. This method is used when traditional root canal treatment has not provided the desired result or is technically impossible, and the goal of the intervention is to save the tooth from total extraction.

Apical root resection allows for the elimination of chronic infection, prevents the development of abscesses, cysts, and the destruction of the jawbone around the tooth, while preserving its natural function and the integrity of the dentition.

Symptoms and signs

Periodic pain or discomfort that often occurs while chewing or pressing on the gums in the area of a previously treated tooth

Appearance of a fistula (sinus tract) on the gums, through which purulent content may discharge, indicating the presence of a chronic inflammatory process near the root apex

Swelling, gum redness, and persistent sensitivity, which indicate the growth of a cyst or the spread of infection in the bone tissue, even if the tooth does not hurt acutely

These signs are a significant reason for conducting an X-ray examination or computed tomography, as it is at these stages that the pathology becomes evident, allowing for timely resection and saving the tooth from extraction.
